« A NARROW ESCAPE. The Auckland brigantine Lady Mabel, Captain Oakes, which recently arrived ab Launcesbon (Tas.) from Eowland Island, with a guano cargo, had a very stormy passage, experiencing a succession of heavy gales, but sustained no damage. She is now loading at Launceston for Sydney.- On the voyago down from Howland Island she had a narrow escape from collision with a large barque. Captain Oakes reported:—". On June 2nd a large barque, bound for China, was sighted at 9 p.m. Sho had no side-lights, and Chough the Lady Mabel ported "her helm and showed a brilliant red light, the barque starboarded her helm and a collision nearly book place."
