CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the City Council 1 was held laeb evening. Present Worship the Mayor (presiding), and CmJI Trenwith, Daviea, Holland, Atkin, Swales, Heweon, Wright, Paterson, Laver c l>ignanj Farrell, - Warren, Grey. / Sundry Letters.—(l) Mr 1?. Cherry wrote that his property-in Ra'ndolph-streeti was being flooded with water.—Referred to tho ward members. (2) Arthur Syere wrote asking if the Council were prepared to lease for eighty years land at the juncv' tion of Jermyn • street and Beach Road, abutting Judge Fen ton's pro., party. —Referred to Finance Committee. (3) Messrs Burrows and Mitchell applied for permission to erect a building in Elliott- > street, the walls of which, as designs, were not strictly in accordance with the building. regulations. The north wall was proposed to be 50 or 60 feet from any other structure , , and the ground open to Darby' Street.. —~ Granted. (4) Mr J. Phillips wrote re the " wretched condition of roads and footpaths in Eden-street."—Referred to the ward : members.

Coal Contract.—Mr J. J» Craig wrote that be harl not yet received any order for coal from the Gouncil under his new contract. The reason given to him was thato so long as Kamo coal could be had, that coal would be used. Mr Craig thought it unfair for the Council to bind a contractor to cup* p!y coal if required, and then not use any. —The Mayor stated that the Council were bound to take Taupiri coal from Craig and Kamo coal from Smith. The waterworks engineer had reported ■lα favour of Kamo coal, and consequently it was being used. The matter was referred to t.he Waterworks Committee for investigation.

Claim for Damages.—Messrs DignaU and Armstrong wrote on behalf of Robert , Salmon, one of whose employees met with an accident in Wynyard-atrect on Satur day, the 19th ulr,, and claiming to recover £50 for loss and injury eustaihed by theii" client in consequence of the alleged neglect of the Council. The accident arose through the caving in of a portion of Wynyard-streefc, which caused the man to be precipitated out of the cart and on to the road, sustaining severe injury.—Referred to the Legal Committee,

Leave op Absence.—Cr. VV. H. Smith, who has left on a trip to Sydney and Melbourne, was granted one month's leave -of absence from his civic duties.—Cr.' Layer was granted another month's leave of absence.

Water by Meteb.—Messrs M. Connolly and George Gregory wrote requesting th&fc their water meters in Heme Bay and Sentinel Road be removed, and charges made by city assessment andhose charges.—Keferred to the Streets Committee.

Manukact Road.—The Town Clerk of Parnoil Borough forwarded copy of areso , lution passed by the Borough Council, " That the City Council be requested to join with Parnell in sending a requisition to theHoti. the Minister for Public Workfl re the extension of Manukau Road across Mechanics' Bay."—Referred to the Streets Committee.

Albert-street Baths.—Cr. Atkin presented a petition from attendants' at the Albert-street Baths, requesting that the Baths be filled with salt water during the winter. He moved that this be referred to the Baths Committee, and this was agreed to. ■':■■■■■' .:.:,.. <, - ; :

Streets Committee. -rThis Committee recommended: (1) Letter from ratepayers (F. J. Bennett and others). Lower ' Queen-street, re lighting of hoarding, . Queefc and Vifetoria streets* that Engineer make -proper > provision by gas lamps; (2) letter .frotn/ Thomas Ward, re steps, Mecualay-street, your Committee cannot recommend the steps being placed; (3) memo, from Engineer, re steam water-heater, Ponsonby engine, that same be affixed ab a cost of about £20. —The report was adopted.

Legal Committee. — This Committee recommended : — (1) Letter from James Peck, offering 2s 6d per week for house at Waikomiti, that house be let to Peck at 2s 6d, subject to a fortnight's notice to quit; (2) letter from Superintendent Fire Brigade re additional sleeping accommodation main station, that) sleeping accommodation for five men be provided at a cost not to exceed £12. (Some discussion took place re the advisability of incurring this expense, but eventually it was passed) j (3) Letter from William Crosher re electric clock—that Mr Crosher'a offer be declined; (4) letter from George Wilson re deposit on dust deposit be returned as desired by him ; (5) letter from Maurice removal of refuse —your Committee does not think any action is heeded: (6) mem<v from Town Clerk re salt Writer, Albert-street) Bathethat the pumping of Salt water to the baths be now discontinued.—The last clause was referred back and' the report, as thua amended, was adopted. Finance Committee.—This Committee recommended that the present agreement .with the National Bank of New &a* land .be renewed for three years. Cry Goldie, in moving the : adoption of the report, stated that the rate of interest paid by the National Bank and also the rate for overdraft was pcr 1 cent. Inquiry had been made at other -banks, and others would not do business ab the same rates.—The report was adopted* \ , Manning-street.—The clerk of the Eden Terrace Bpad Board wrote complaining of the condition of Manning-street, and asking that theCouncilshould try and have the work within the city boundary dofte* as eOori aa possible.—Cr. Trenwibh moved, "That the levelsof Manning-street be ad/itertieed*"-— Cr. Daviea seconded the motion,, and'it was agreed to. . ■" ' ' v .' ■. •■■.

DoMAIN.—TIie Domain Commhfcee recommended :—(l) i?e letter from united Cricket Clubs (8), suggesting appointment of a manager of ground, that for the present the arrangements already made, be adhered to, (2) Letter from the Secretary of the Fourth Junior Football Association and report from Cricket Ground caretaker, deferred, to visit.—The report was adopted.
