London, April 30. The second day's racing of the Newmarket First Spring Meeting took place to-day. The race for the Two Thousand Guineas resulted :—
Two Thousand Guineas, a subscription of £100 each, h. ft., for three-year-olds ; colts, 9st; fillies, Bst 91b ; second to receive £200 out of the etakes and third to save hie stake. R.M. (1 mile 17 yards). Mr A. W. Merry's b c Surefoot, by Wisdom, dam by Galopin—Miss Foote ... 1 Baron de Rothschild's eh c Le Nord, by Tristan—La Noce 2 Duke of Beaufort's br c Blue Green, by Coeruleas—Angelica 3 The Hon. J. White's colts, Kirkham and Narellan, were scratched.
By winning the Two Thousand Guineas, Surefoob has confirmed his two-year-old running, for his public performances last season stamped him the "crack" of his year. The colt is owned by Mr. A. W. Merry, and trained by C. W. Jousiffe at Lambourne. Surefdot made his debut into public life ab Epsom, whereat carrying Bst 91b he won the Woodcote Stakes (six furlongs) by half a length from Heresy (Bst 91b), rive lengths behind the latter finishing Bel Demonio (Bat 121b) third, there being half-a-dozen ruuners. His next appearance resulted in defeat, for carrying 9st, he met Semolina (Sst 101b) in the Thirty-second Ascot Biennial, and was, after a most desperate finish, beaten a head by her, a former opponent, Heresy (Bst 101b) being beaten three lengths from the son of Wisdom. At the same meeting, however, he easily carried 9st 31b to victory for the New Stakes, winning that event by a length from Heaume (9st 31b), the third, Hidden Treasure, being three lengths further in the rear, while Surefoot's twoold career was brought to a close when, at Goodwood, carrying 9st 51b ho won the Findon Stakes in a canter by three lengths from Red Thorn (Bst 91b), Cuckoo (Bst 121b) being a bad third. Surefoot thus won three out of the four races he etarted for.
Lβ Nord, who ran second to Surefoot, is a stable companion of Heaum, the winner of the Hastings Plate yesterday. Lβ Nord ran half a dozen times in England last season, winning the Knighton Plate at Leicester, the Molecombe Stakes at Goodwood, and the Hopeful Stakes and Dewhursb Plate at Newmarket. Hβ was beaten by Riviera, in the Champagne Stakes, at Doncasber, and by Signorina, in the Middlepark Plate at Newmarket. He was bred in France, and nominated by M. Lefevre, but last season carried the colours of Baron de Rothschild.
The race for the Two Thousand Guineas was instituted so far back as 1809, when it was won by Mr N. Wilson's colt, Wizard, by Sorcerer ; and among the many inscribed on the roll of winners is Musket's soa, Petronel, who wae successful in 1880, carrying the Duke of Beaufort's colours. The course over which the race is run is the Rowley Mile, the finish of which is very severe. ,
Both Surefoot and Lβ Nord are engaged in the Epsom Derby run next month. Hippona.
