BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The ordinary meeting of the Board of Education was held this afternoon. Present : Messrs Udy (Chairman), Lennox, Monk, M.H.R., Carr, Luko, Upton, and Goldio, M.H.R.
Chairman's Report.—The Chairman's report was read, and approved. Tenders have been invited for additions to teacher's house at Otahuhu and for teacher's house at Paparata. The teacher at Papatoitoi reports the school temporarily closed on account of typhoid in the district. The Cumulative Vote. — Mr Monk stated that ho wished to make it known that the cumulative vote at elections of school committees is still in existence. It was abolished by the House of Representatives, but the Upper House retained it, so that cumulative voting is still in force. ' "
Horsfshob Bush.—Mr Monk asked that the application for a school at Horseshoe Bush should be re-considered, and that the people be granted a half-time school. Resolved to refer'to the Inspector for report. Mangeee DrsTKiCT. —A deputation of the Committee of the Mangere district waited on the Board to urge the claims of the district to a new school.— Mr Upton said he thought the building of aechoolatpresentwould be premature. The Chairman stated that the matter had been carefully considered, and it had been decided that as there was still room in the Mangere school for all the children of the district, a new school was as yet unneceßsary. Mr Taylor asked the Chairman to vindicate him from the charge of having been opposed to the establishment of a school, and Mr Udy stated that Mr Taylor had really done his best to get a school established. It was resolved to defer the matter for a week for full information, as Messrs Maesey and JMclntyre brought fjeveral new facts before the Board.
School Painting.—Mr Allwright reports on the complaint /of Inspector Goodwin, re school painting Wing improperly done, that the specifications must have_ been neglected by the Committee if the painting were not well done. The Committee ought to examine the lead and oil beforehand, as they were required to do by the specifications. Mr Monk said he thought an arrangement should be made with some firm in town for tm supply of materials. The matter was deferred for report as to what schools had been badly painted.
Aim Examination.—The Chairman said that there would not be time for all the schools to be communicated with in time for the examination in drawing on May 9th. It was decided to do what was possible,and proceed with the examination. Anxadale.—Application for school referred to Inspector for report.
