ALLEGED HORSE-STEALING.

Some time ago Colonel Dawson missed a brown bay mare from the paddock surrounding bis residence at Ellerslie. He gave information to the police, and subsequently advertised a reward of £10 for the recovery of the missing animal. The matter was placed in the hands of Acting-Detective Herbert, by whom a young man named Henry Edmonds was arrested. Mr Paterson, of the firm of Paterson Bros.,omnibus proprietors,having seen the advertisementin the Star, informed Colonel Dawson and also the police that a mare answering the description had been sold to him. She was subsequently identified by Col. Dawson, and this led to the arrest of the accused.

Henry Edmonds was charged afc the Polico Court this morning, before Messrs J. P. King and W. Cheal, justices, with having stolen a mare, valued £20, which same ■was the property of Colonel Charlton DawBon.—lnspector Broham conducted the prosecution, and Mr C. E. Madden appeared for the accused.

' Charlton Dawson deposed to having missed the mare from hia paddocks about 6.30 o'clock on the morning of the 20th of February. He next saw the mire in the possession of the police. Accused had been in his employ, and witness had given him a good character whon he left. . William Paterson deposed to the accused Belling the mare to him for £4. Thomas Paterson gave corroborative evic ence.

'■ James Campbell deposed that he was until lately groom at Harmston's Circus. The accused came up to the circus on the ;20th ulb. on a dark brown mare, and asked for the boss, as he had partly sold the mare to him for £8.

Acting - Detective Herbert deposed to .tracing the accused, taking him into arrest, and also recovering the mare. : Constable Stewart also cave evidence.

Prisoner was committed for trial, and allowed bail, himself in £100 and two sureties of £50 each.
