Its aim ia to sefc forth » b y ttraotive description and first-class pictnrial illustration, the extraordinary proress made by tho colony during the past fifty years. In this effort no expense which aid contribute to render the work worthy { the subject and the colony has been a chromo-lithographic cover deicttog some of the most notable New Zealand scenes, the book comprises upvvurds of a hundred first-class engravings, exhibiting the Bconery and the industrial and commercial buildings of the colony, together with views of the chief towns, contrasting their appearance to-day with their condition at an earlier period. These pictures are especially interesting. Combined with these features are wellwritten articles on the chief products and industries of the colony, statistical information ami other matter, which will enable colonial to send abroad in a very convenient and attractive form a faithful picture of the land they live in. Part I. g' ves a ligtsfc, palatable sketch of the year 1840, the formation of New Zealand into a colony and the conditionof the country at fchab date. This Bketcb is nicely illustrated with pictures of the various scenes at the time of the narrative, including the departure of an early emigrant ship for New Zealand, and the interior of tho vessel afc dinner-time, quite a marked contrast to the splendid cabins and appointments of the ocean-liner of to-day. The second portion of the paper consists of a picture of New Zealand in the year 1890. Each of the leading centres is described and illustrated with numerous engravings of all the principal buildings and striking ecenery in and around them. The cities of Auckland, Wellington, Chrietchurch, and Dunedin are also historically treated, short accounts being given of the arrival of the first emigrants,compiled from most original sources. Tho third part is devoted to "The Products and Industries" of New Zealand, and includes historical accounts of the initiation and progress of most of the leading products. These include wool, gold, grain, kauri gum, preserved and frozen meats, Mx, dairy produce, etc., etc., with tables of statistics for the last 35 years.
The'work baa been published under the special endorsement of the Commissioners of the New Zetland and South Seas Exhibition. Ifc contains a review of the Exhibition ; and the Government recognising its great value as a medium for spreading a knove\e&e,e. af the resources of the colony widely, abroad hftve registered ib as a newspaper, so that the postage in the colony will only be one half-penny, and abroad one penny. Exclusive of the pictorial cover the work will comprise sixty papes of matter and illustrations, rather larger than tho "Graphic" or " Illustrated London News," printed on fine toned paper. Nevertheless, to ensure a wide circulation, the publisher has fixed the price at one shilling per copy.
