The chief items of expenditure were : Examinations, £1,854185"4 d ; scholarships, £1,5015s j there being a balance of £291 4s. In 1889 the University examined a total of 593 candidates, of which 10Q were for 8.A., 4 for B. Sα, 21 LL.B., 20 Honours in Art, 20 for M.8,, and 2 for M.D. degree. At the December examinations 298 went up for matriculation, 23 medical preliminary commencement, 8 do. completion, and 76 for junior scholarships. The Chancellor quotes statistics to show the progress of the University, comparing it favourably with Melbourne and Sydney. The result was due to the manner in which the affiliated colleges had carried on the work. It was a sovsifce of regret that a large and important patffc of the colony was unprovided for, but it was hoped a fully equipped college in the central part of the islands would soon be an accomplished fact. The nominations of Chancellor and Vice-Chancellor will be made to-day, and the seat vacant by the death of the late Mr Justice Gillies tilled on Monday.
