AN EX.CITIIfG SCENE. COLLISION OFF KAIKOURAS. BOTH VESSELS REACH LYTTELTON. Christchurch:, 2 p.m.
The Roto rua, for Lyttelton, and Orawaiti, for Westpc rt, collided in a thick fog off Kaikoura fit a quarter to this morning. Neitl #er vessel was seriously injured. The Rot arua left Wellington at six last night, an/d.the foghorns were going all night. ■ , Captain Nfeville was on tho bridge, ana saw the light just in front, and hoard the foghorn. , ; - ■ , He instantly slowed the engines, and the Rotorua i /as almost at a standstill when the collision </ccurred. , Several passengere ruehed on deck ana for a tinj/o there was some excitement. In 15 minutes it; was found/there was no occasion for alarm. The boats were cot out. All preparations were/made for saving life.
