RACING CONFERENCE.

HORSES FOR AUCKLAND

MEETING.

NOTES ON THE RACING.

JBy. Telegbaph.— From Hippona.)

Dunedin, this day. I have endeavoured to-day to find out what Southorn horses are likely to put in appearance at the Auckland Racing Club Summer Meeting. Tirailleur will be taken uptocontoat the Derby ; and E. Cutts tells me he leaves next week with Pygmalion ; but I question whether Cynisca or Diidu will accompany the crack two-year-old. The last-named has slightly bruised one of her feefc. In conversation with Mr Stead, he stated it was practically settled that Scots Grey would not go up, but favourably treated he may alter his mind. The owners of Recluse will not undertake the journey, it being their intontion to take the horse off for a few weeks. British Lion is to run the West Coast meeting at Christmas. Mr Henry Redwood informs me he intends taking up a couple of his two-year-olds. An Auckland bookmaker has brought Raglan into prominence for our Cup, backing him to win 250 at 100 to 12. Hβ also accepted 50 to 6on Hilda. Tho best price on ofier about the pair is 600 to 14.

The horses that took part in the Exhibition and nearly the whole of the visiting ownera and trainers came up by express tonight. Mr D. O'Brien arrived at Dunedin this morning from Melbourne. In a conversation I had with him before leaving Dunedin be told me he would journey to Auckland ihortly. Mr Gollan was asked, on behalf of a well- , knovrn New South Wales sportsman, to pufc a price on Tirailleur, but declined to part with the colt.

Tho Northern contingent had a good day eu Monday owing to Lady Florin's win. They would have been right in it bub for the execrably bad starting which again prevailed, and owing to which Reoluse just missed the six furlongs race. When tho flag ultimately fell he was the last horse and the more desperate efforts his rider made in the early part of the race to bring him up to the field took too much bub of him or else he musb have won easily. Aβ ib was he was just beaten on the post, thanks to Derritb's good generalship. Ruby would have been served up very warm for the Grandstand Handicap, but for the fact that he was severely punished in the Jubilee Plate, only devoted followers of the stable standing him after that. The finish of this race was the fineet of tho meeting, five horses being in ib up to the last stride, when Derritb by sheer hard riding just managed to lift his mount's no&e in front Of the two-year-old. Corolla, the favourite, got; tho worst of a poor start, of which Enamason made the most, being kept going all the way. Lady Mab tried to get the inside running, but being disappointed, had to suffer a length's defeat. Buddicorabe evidently profited by the lesson White taught him in the big race. On the second day Driver was hooted for the start ho gave in the Jubilee Plate, and in high dudgeon loft the course, the flag being wielded the rest of the day by two stewards. The feature of the meeting of course was the nne form shown by Stephenson's and Bazletbs stable, but yesterday's race shows Occident is now a weight-carrier. Fran-

cotte's easy defeat of such a flyer as Foreeber proves him a sprinter that would bo "•worth keeping for a Newmarket Handicap, «" but he is a hard horse to train. Recluse is far from well, but will prove a thorn in the autumn. . ,„■„.,

EXHIBITION MEETING: THIRD DAY.

.Owinp , to interruption in the wires on Monday night I was unable to send notes of the third day's racing at Dunedin. - ' The starting was again of the worst description, and could give points and beat anything of the kind I have ever witnessed in Auckland. Ahua won the Hurdles simply by Lunn's ma**niticenb riding at the finish, for nb the distance ib looked any odds against the horse getting up. The- President s Handicap resulted, as iNorbh Islanders expected, in Lady Florin ■winning from end to end, and not once did <Collelo"*move on her. Occident's weighb stopped him. The first half mile was run In 54sec, the 6 furlongs in lmin. 19sec., and the mile in lmin. 45sec. Mr George Ellis, ■who is an old Auckl&nder, was heartily congratulated on his win, and it was the largest stake that has fallen to his lob since his'connection with racing. Lady Florin being proved in foal to Le Loup, will only be raced for a few month* longer. Scobs Grey's victory in the Jubilee Plato "was a great surprise to the outside public, for the son of Musket ran last in tho Exhibition Cup on the first day and occupied a similar position in the Onslow Plate the second day. His connections evidently fancied him, for they only paid dividends of £7 13a and £7 ss. Francotte was a great pob, but he ran badly, much to tho chagrin of his followers. The totaliaator receipts at bbc meeting have cob been so large as expected, a,nd the Oub will be fortunate if there is not a loss •over the four days.
