POLICE COURT-THIS DAY.
~ (Before Dr. Giles, R.M.) Drunkenness.—One firsb offenderwas fined 5s or in default 24 hours' bard labour. James Speirs was fined 20s for a similar offence, or in default 48 hours' hard labour. Alleged Wife Desertion. — William Douglas Scott was charged with having, on the 13th of July, deserted his wife, Jane Scott. —Inspector Broham asked that the prisoner should be remanded to Napier. — Mr Tole appeared for the .defendant and said that the man had no intention to desert his wife, and intended to go back again to her. He was willing to give bail to appear at Napier within a week.—His Worship remanded the defendant to Napier. Bail was allowed, himself in £50 and two sureties of £40 each.
Argumentative Expressmen. — Henry McGinn was charged with having on the 26th of July used provoking language to one John Sinclair. Mr J. A. Tole appeared for the defendant and pleaded not guilty.— John Sinclair deposed that on Friday, the 26fch, be was passing McGinn in Victoria - street when he threatened to knock witness's head off and used other provoking language. This had been done on several occasions, although witness had asked him to desist. He had also called witness "a buck flea," an "atheist," and other unpleasant names. — Peter Wilson deposed that he was present on the occasion referred to. He saw McGinn throw off his coat and try to geb into the carfc. He heard McGinn threaten to break Sinclair's head. Witness did nob hear what transpired before that. McGinn was creating disturbances almost every day.— Constable Howell deposed to being called by Sinclair on the day in question. He said that McGinn was constantly annoying him. He saw defendant with his coat off. — Henry McGinn, the defendant, deposed that Sinclair said to him : " What are you grunting afc . You're not an Irish pig, are you t" Sinclair then threatened to hit him on the head with his! whip. Witness then took off his coat, but did not strike Sinclair. It was the complainant who used the provoking language., —His Worship decided to dismiss the case* '• each party to pay their own costs.
