CARING FOR THE OLD FOLKS.

James Baker was called afc tha Police Court this morning before Dr. Giles, R.M ,' to show cause why he should not contribute towards the support of his mother. Mr W. J. Napier appeared for the complainant. Mrs Telford. was called and deposed that she was the daughter of Mrs Ann Baker and sister of defendant. Her mother was at present residing with her and was 82 years of age. Her husband \va3 out of work and she was unable to maintain her mother any longer. She had not troubled him previously, as he had been paying 5s per week towards the support of his father in the Refuge, bub now that the father was dead she thought he ought to assist in supporting his mother. Her brocher was a warder in the Asylum, getting £6 6s per month and his keep, besides which his family were now married and no cost to him. She had applied to the Charitable Aid Board, but was instructed to take other proceedings. James Baker deposed that he was now ou'o of work, having received notice to leave, the Asylum, as the branch in which he was engaged was to be given up. Ho had maintained his father in the Refuge. All Mra Telford wanted was the money. She had such respect for her father that neither she nor any of her family followed him to the grave. Being out of work, he could not at present offer to maintain his mother.

Under the circumstances, Dr. Giles refused to make any order, but said that the Charitable Aid Board were quite right in insisting that the case should be brought before the Court.
