Need we revert to volumes old,. Where' tales of history are told, To gaze on erlories' bright array.' No for the men who grace our time Stand forth in nobleness sublime, With deeds to deck our modern day. What though his work was never blown With trumpet's blast in stirring tone Along the alley-ways of fame? Yet deathless splendours shall enshrine And glory wave her torch divine O'er David Sutherland's proud name. I need not tell the tale you know, Of how he faced his fiendish foe Amid the silent, scenes of night. No friendly hand was there to aid, As with the ruffian undismayed He grappled in his fearless might. Why sudden starts that crimson stream 9 Two sharp reports with vivid gleam, And then the foul assassin fled. His victim sank beneath the hall, He gave his life at duty's call.
