THE SAMOAN HURRICANE.
See England! On bosom of the far Pacific Ocean, In treacherous shelter of Apia's bay, At anchor resting. The gallant warships lav at gloomy sunset, Each noble bark in taut and trim array, The surges breasting.
What threatens? The fitful air has sunk to sudden stillness As if fierce nature braced hor giant power 3 Like tiger crouohing. Anon a rushing fury tears in foam wreaths From each advancinar wave the frothy spray And hurls it skyward.
The tempest, Now shrieking through the ropes like banshee
wailing, Now swelling like a thousand cannons roar. While far out seaward. The mist-hid sun. like leaden globe descending Beneath the leaping waters of the sea, And rocks to leeward.
Ah. sorrow! . Por helpless, by the cruel surges hurried, The ships crash on the rock-engirdled snore, And brave men perish. All, all but one that bears the flap; of England, Outsafely through the tempest's wildest roar. Bravo, my hearties!
See nations, , . , •. They iie who say that England a migbt is failing, . They drivel that her decadence proclaim; Let danger threaten, Then shall ye see her men with hearts as steady As those of yore that won her peerless name Ready, aye, ready! T.W.D.
