[PRESS ASSOCIATION.]
[by electric telegraph—COPYßlGHT.]
London, May 1. At the Newmarket First Spring Meeting, to-day, the Two Thousand Guineas was decided, with the following result -.—
Two Thousand Guineas Stakes, a subscription of £100 each, h.ft. for three years old : colts, 9st, and fillies, Bsb 91b ; second to receive £200 out of the stakes, and third to save his stake. R.M. (lmile 17yds.)—79 subs.
Mr. W. Low's br c Napoleon, by Galopin—Crucible 1 Mr R. H. Combe's eh c Kettlebury, by Uncas—Cauldron 2 eh f Carmine (?), by Thurio— Blood Red 3
. Napoleon, the winner of the great English ""' classic " race, is an inmate of the famous Kingclere stable, and was prepared by John Porter. The colt was bred by Mr Simons Harrison, and Mr W. Low, his present owner bought him for 2,400 guineas. His only appearance in public last season was at Lewes meeting in August, when he ran unplaced in the Astley Stakes, for two-year-olds. Great things were entertained of Napoleon last season, but they "were nob fulfilled, and during the winter months Gay Hampton, a stable companion, was in favour for the race. Napoleon comes from a great winning sire in Galopin, while Crucible was got by Rosicrucian, her dam, Apple Sauce, being by Camerino, out of Pine Apple, by Knight of Kars.
Kettlebtjry, who occupied second place, was got by Uncas, sire of the New Zealand Stud Company's stallion Ingomar. Last season he started six times, but was only successful on one occasion, his single victory being gained in the Stool-bridge Posb Sbakes in June, in which he only had another opponent.
The name of the third horse has been mutilated in transmission. To those ab this great distance from the scene, it will come surprising that Donovan's name does not appear as the winner or runner-up in the event, but ib is more than likely he was a non-starter.
