LAYING THE FOUNDATION STONE
THE CEREMONY TO-MORROW.
The ceremony of laying the foundation stone of the new Costley Home for the, aged poor will be performed to-morrow afternoon by His Excellency the Governor, Earl Onslow. The notice is very short, but for this reason it is all the moro desirable that the citizens should give their hearty cooperation to make the event asuccese. It will be remembered that the Charitable Aid^ Board decided at a recent meeting to ro-' quest Lord Onslow to lay the foundation stone, and in pursuance with that decision Mr Charles Atkiu, Chairman of the Charitable Aid Board, waited on His Excellency to-day, and preferred the request. Lord Onslow had previously decided to leave early to-morrow morning for Wellington, but very graciously promised to defer bis departure till Thursday in order that he might comply with the desire of the citizens in the matter. The ceremony has been fixed for to-morrow afternoon, and arrangements made for special trams to run for the convenience of the public. It is hoped thattherewillbeaverylargeattendance. The new Costley Home for the aged poor which is about to be built is to supercede the present refuges or. the Hospital grounds, and will be constructed oub of funds donated by the labo Mr Costley for thab specific purpose. A design prepared by Mr E. Bartley, architect, has been adopted, and a tender, that of Mr E. A. Matthews, £7,297, accepted for tho construction of tne building. His Excellency has fixed 4 p.m. to-morrow as the time at wiiich it will be most convenient for him that the ceremony should take place. A special mooting of the Board is convened for 11 a.m. to-morrow.
