CHARGE OF ROBBERY.
PROSECUTION BY A CHINKEY.
John Sheiks was charged ab the Police Court this morning, before Dr. Giles, R.M., with having on the 20th April stolen from the dwelling of William Ching the sum of 10s.
Prisoner pleaded nob guilty. Sergeant-Major Pratt appeared on behalf of bhe police. Mr Thomas Quoi was sworn in as interpreter. Ah Ching deposed bhab he resided in Customs-street, where ho kepb a boardinghouse. The prisoner came there ab 9.30 o'clock on the nighb of bhe 20th of April. Wibness left; a vesb with 12s in the pocket on the table. He saw the prisoner with hi. hand in the pocket of the vest, and afterwards missed IDs. Witness called after him, bub he walked sbraighb oub of the door and down tho wharf. A man called " Jimmy" brought him back, and Constable Addison was senb for and took him .into custody.
James Scanlon, cook ab tho boardinghouse of the last witness, deposed to going out and bringing back the prisoner, who came back readily and denied the charge when accused. _.
Constable Addison deposed to having arrested tho prisoner en the night of the 20th cf April. Prisoner denied having- committed the theft. Upon searching him 2 single shillings and 4 pennies were found upon him.
"His Worship decided to give the prisoner the benefit of the doubb and accordingly dismissed bhe case.
