ARCH HILL TRAGEDY.
PAYET BEFORE THE COURT.
Louis Payet appeared on remand at the Police Court this morning to answer to the charge that on tho sth day of April, at Arch Hill, near Auckland, he did feloniously, wilfully, and of malice aforethought kill and murder one Mary Ann Wilson.
Messrs S. Y. Colling and J. P. King wore the presiding justices.
Mr Hugh Shorfclancl appeared on behalf of the prisoner.
Inspector Broham asked for a remand for eight clear days, in order to enable the police to prepare their evidence.—The remand was granted.
Payeb cauie to New Zealand from New Caledonia. He states that he was not 3ent out as a convict.
THE INQUEST,
At 2 o'clock this afternoon an inques was held at the District Hospital, befor 0 the Coroner, Dr. Philson, and a jury of six> to inquire into the circumstances surround' ing the death of Mary Ann Wilson.
Mr Hugh Shortland was present on behalf of Payefc, and Inspector Broham conducted affairs on behalf of the police.
Mr Matthew Finlayson was chosen foreman of the jury.
Edward JJawson, elevk in the R.M. Court Auckland, produced the depositions of the deceased Mary Ann Wilson. These were already published in yesterday's iseue.
Richard Walsh gave evidence to having met the woman o'a the way to *;he Hospital, and to having telephoned the information to the police.
