The following business was transacted after we went to press.on Friday.
Inspector's Report fob 1888.—Annual reports for 1888 were presented as follows : —Mr J. S. Goodwin reported on the schools of the Northern Division that he had examined 88 schools in standards and presented 46 inspection reports. Ten. of these reports related to small schools which were examined and inspected on the same day. Fifteen schools had been specially reported as unsatisfactory. The total number "of scholars presented was 6,136 ; absent, 230 ; excepted, 176 ; failed, 811 ; passed, 2,714. The mean average age of those that passed was 12 years 1 month. Mr Wm. Fidler reported, re schools in the northern division during 1888. There were in this district at the close of the year 104 schools, four of which had not been visited. He examined 95 schools and inspected 57. Thototal number of scholarspresented wa53,973; absent, 167; excepted, 177: failed, 595 ; passed, 1,603 ; average age of those passed, 12 years 3 months. These returns were obtained from a district in which there are very many small schools, including half-time and aided schools. Thirty-three of the schools, examined, had less than 25 scholars on the roll. Inspector W. H. Airey reported of the schools of the central division for the year ended December, 1888, There are in this division 48 schools. The number of children presented was 11,287 ; absent, 372 ; excepted, 552 ; failed, 1,144; passed, 5,065. , ' Tenders. —The following were accepted : School and teacher's house at Awitu, H. Evans, £9 19s; Dome Valley', Robert Horsley, £8 6s.—lt was decided to call for fresh tenders for painting schools at Wairangi, Te Puke and Driving Creok.
