CITY COUNCIL.

The ordinary meeting of the City Council was held last evening. Present: — The Mayor, Crs. Davies, Warren, Farrell, Lennox, Grey, Crowther, Holland, Atkin, Smith, Dignan,' Swales, Evans, /Layer, Hewson, Paterson, Cooper. CoTtitESPONDENOE. —From T. S, Morrin and Co. notifying acceptance of order for galvanised iron pipes. Letter received.— From D. S. Cattanach, asking to have the channelling concreted in Hepburn-street. Resolved that the work be done.—From W. H. Connell, asking permission to surrender lease of lot 35, oubsection 5, of section 13, Abercrombie- street. Referred to Finance Committee.—From J. J. Craig, asking for reduction of rental on an allotment, Symonds-street and Rutland-street. Referred bo Finance Committee. — From Harry Howiu, asking for reduction of 20 per cent, on rental of allotment in Wellesley - street. Referred to Finance Committee. — From John Alexander, asking for reduction of rental of allotment leased by J. G. Buchanan in Wellesley-street. Referred to Streets Committee.—From the New Zealand Frozen Meat and Storage Company, stating that it would be unwise ab the present time to force sale,<of property in Emily Place. Resolved that the sale be postponed for one year.— From the same Company, asking permission to erect iron buildings on the land reclaimed by them. Referred to the Legal Committee. — From University Senate, thanking the Council for uso of Chamber during present session. Letter received.— From Committee of St. Peter's Presbyterian Church, asking on what terms the Council would grant lease of allotment situated at the corner of Ponsonby Road and Hopetown-atreet, as they contemplated building a« church on that . site. Referred to the Finance Committee. — From W. Thorne, re notice to attend to drainage of his property, stating that it had been done by the Council contractor, and should therefore be all right. He therefore requested that any necessary repairs should bo done by the Council at its expense. Referred to the Ward Foreman to examine and report to Streets Committee. From the Board of Education, re account for water supply and cleaning closets, stating that during the period claimed for the school was closed. Resolved that tho water must be paid for, as no notice was given that the school was closed, and the water had been-used.— From the Auckland Amateur Athletic and Bicycle Club, asking for permit to use the Domain Cricket Ground for' sports on Saturday, the 6th of April. Resolved that tho application be granted.— From Eden Terrace Road Board, asking Council to have the approach to tho city end of Manning-street properly formed. Referred to the ward members to examine and report.—From Thomas Slater, pointing out that the Market-house required painting; also other repairs. Deferred until the Finance Committee reported.— From the Auditor-General, stating that he would instruct the new inspoctor with regard to cost of Council's audit. Received. " Reports.—The recommendations of the Streets Committee were read' and adopted as lollows :—Letter from Edward Mahoney and Son, re permit roadway from Hobson to Nelson Streets. —That the request be granted on condition that the road asked for be permitted as a right-of-way subject to the construction of the right-of-way and kerbs being to the satisfaction of the Engineer, and on the other usual con-, ditions, i.e., that no house or building be erected having a frontage to the right-of-way, or the sole entrance to any house from the right-of-way, and that a gate be erected at the entrance to the right-of-way and there maintained, and the rightof - way maintained in good repair to the satisfaction of the City Engineer.— Petition from residents of Sheehan-streetre gully drainage. Deferred for ward members' report to Committee. —Petition from ratepayers of Karangahape Road re street watering. The watering of Karangahape Road ouce in the morning by means of the hose so long as the water supply permits.— Memo, from Engineer re repairs Ponsonby engine. That work be done at a cost of £18 in terms of Pumping Engineer's report.

Finance Committee. —The report was adopted as follows :—Memo from city solicitor ra payment to Maguirs on account, Ponsonby reservoir No. 2 (referred with power to act). Your Committee has instructed that the sum of £581 6s 3d be paid to Mr Maguire in full of deposit, interest, and balance of contract; thus leaving £100 still in Council's hands, in lieu of non-com-pletion of wall by Maguire for Ponsonby No. 2 reservoir.

Legal Committee.—The Committee recommended as follows :—Memo, from Town Clerk (new), re ventilation, Art Gallery. That the Gallery be ventilated as per report of sub-committee (Crs Hewson and Holland) at a cost of £18.—Letter from T. J. Mclvbr, re cemetery by-laws. That area ? be shown on plan, where bodies may be interred, and for which the right in perpetuity has not been purchased, and which 'may be purchased within two .years.—The report was adopted. Finance Committee. —This Committee reported re City Market, memo, from Town Clerk and Engineer, ra repairs, etc. Your Committee report that on the 22nd February the City Market was leased by auction for a term of three years, to Mr Thos. Slater, at a rental of £75 per month, an increase of £10 per month, and your Committee recommend that Council instruct the Engineer to piepare plans and specifications for repairs to interior of Market, as suggested by memo, from Clerk of Works, dated 21st February, and with power to Finance Committee, to accept tender.—This report was adopted.

North Ward. —The members reported re letter from Henry Hartnoll re IVelsonstreet formation—The North Ward members, having revisited the premises, recommend that tho sum of £10 be paid to Mr Hartnoll without prejudice.

Ponsokbt Wakd.—The members recommended that Haekett-streeb be repaired as asked for, and that the dangerous portion of Herne Bay be barricaded.—This was agreed to. *, Public Health Offices. —On the motion of the Mayor, the Council resolved to forward an expression of regret and condolence to Mrs Stoakwell on account of the death of her husband, the late public health officer, Dr. Stockwell.— It was resolved to refer the matter of filling the vacancy to the Legal Committee.

Presentation. — The Mayor wished the Council to accept a picture by Blomfield of " Casfcle Rock," for the Art Gallery. On the motion of Cr. Dignan it was resolved to thank the Mayor for his present.

Hobson-stbbet Bridge. —A report was received from the Engineer in respect to the work of throwing a bridge from Hob-son-street to the Hobson-streeb Wharf, at a cost of £900, and the Engineer was instructed to prepare plans for the work. Cook street Works. — The following tenders were received for the formation of a portion of Cook-street East:—E. Murphy, £345; T. Regan, £308 10s; Kelly and Somers, £392 5s 7d : B. Berry, £365 12s ; "McGee and Foi-resb, £374 9s ; M. McSheffrey, £330 12s 4d ; W. Bolton, £306 6s lOd ; Sheddon and Co., £360 ; Lovett and Co., £29113s Id. Engineer's estimate, £350. Lovett and Co.'s tender was accepted.

Wokk IN Clietoh-street. —On the motion of Cr, Evans it was resolved that the work asked for in Cliffcon-streeb be done in terms of the Engineer's report.

Poudbette Works.-—Letters were received from Messrs M, Reid and W. A. McCaul still further objecting to nightsoil being deposited at New Lynn. The Avondale Road Board also wrote objecting to the deposit and threatening to put cm a itoU and, ,io - ohargo both nightsoil carts

and funerals. — Cr. Grey moved aaj Cr. Crowther seconded, "That the r Q : s.olution passed by this Council on the 6th day of "December, 1888, be rescinded, ans that" cither arrangements be made for a dep&t" for the city nightsoil before the end'of tKo present contract.'.'-. ; Cr. Lennox pointed ,out that the Council ba^d nothing whatever to do with the selection of the site. They simply approved of the one chosen by Mr White. —Cr. Hewson considered that the land that way would do with nightsoil for the next 20, years,— Cr, Grey suggested that the matter should be adjourned for a fortnight, as the matter was shortly to be brought before a public meeting.—Cr. Goldie agreed with the idea of deferring'the matter for a fortnight.— Cr. Cooper said that the Waitemata County Council could nob interfere as long as the works were not a nuisance.—He thought that the work should be proceeded with.—; ■< Cr. Atkin objected to any further delay hi :; tho matter.—Cr. Paterson thought that ib was unfair to the contractor for there to be any further delay.—Cr. Crowther thought '~ the Council should take a firm stand in the ( matter.—The letters were received, and the motion negatived.

Crossing at Patteson-stbeet. —Cr. Evans moved : " That the Engineer prepare plans and specifications for asphalting footpath on south side of Patteson-streefc; also for crossing from Billington's corner to junction of Victoria and Wellesley-streets.": —This was seconded by Cr. Cooper.—Cr,; Goldie pointed out that the motion must Be dropped, as the matter was already in the; hands of the ward members. — Ultimately! the motion was lost by ten to seven.' A division was claimed, when Crs. Evans,' Lennox, Dignan, Holland, Swales, Smith, Cooper, Evans and the Mayor voted for the' motion, and Crs. Davies, Warren, Farrell, Goldie, Grey, • Crowther, _ Atkin, Layer,: Hewson and Patterson against it. %.;
