LICENSING COMMITTEES.

The election of Chairmen for the Licensing Committees of Auckland North, East, South, Karangahape and Crafton took place at Mr Collins' office.Police Court Buildings, to-day, at 11 a.m. The members of City North, viz., Messrs Ne>vman, Bell, Whitehead, Milne, and Goldie met, when Mr Goldie was unanimously elected to the position named. Some discussion took place as to the means to be employed to put down Sunday - trading and selling over hours. It was resolved that the Chairman warn all hotel - keepers in the district at the meeting in March next that the Committee would enforce the law against all known offenders if aftersuch warning they still continued the practice. At 11.30 the members of City South and Karangahape met. In the case of the lormer Mr Goldie was elected, and in tha latter Mr H. Hirst. After some discussion the following circular was drafted and ordered to be sent by the Chairman to each hotel-keeper in the respective district, so that they wili have no cause for complaint if the Committee have occasion to compel obedience to the law :—" Sir,—lt having been reported to this Committee that a large amount of Sunday drinking and drinking after hours is being allowed in the hotels in this ward, this is to give you notice that proper means will be . adouted to ascertain whether such is the case or not and if proved to the satisfaction of the committee steps will be taken at the annual meeting either to close the hotel when such is proved to exist, or to remove the hotelkeeper, the committee being determined in the interest of law and order as well as in the interest of those hotel keepers who conduct their houses properly to put the practice of illegal selling down. ISo further warning will be given but action taken in June next against all offenders."
