The eighteenth athletic carnival of this club is being held on the Cricket Ground this afternoon. Tiie sports were originally to have been held last Saturday, butowinS to the wet weather were postponed. The club has now been favoured with beautifully tine, though rather cold weather, _ and everything is going off smoothly. In spite of the recent rain the ground is in good condition for running, aud tho change irom yesterday's wet together with the very interesting programme prepared has tempted out a large concourse of spectators, among whom aro many ladies. The ground ha.- been roped oil' to prevent any crowding by the onlookers, while tapes have been laid down the centre of the ground for the competitors in the sprint races to run between. Ah all the athletes appsar to be in great fettle, 30ine very interesting finishes are promised, particularly towards the close oi the afternoon, when the piece de resistance —the Quarter Mile Handicap comes up for decision. Tho Artillery Band are piescir under Bandmaster Hunter, who has airangcd the follosving choico musical programme : — Grand polka (Quick March), "General Boulanger " (F. 0. De.iormes) ; valse, "Lucky Stars" (PI. Rund); selection, "Sounds of Svveotneas" (From "La Traviata," "Puritana," and "Lucia"), (Metcalfe); quadrille, "Echoes from the We.-U,"(E. Newton); selection, " Martha' (Flotow) ; valse, " Gipsy Bride' (Metcalfe) ; solo polka, " Express (Dawson); fantasia, " Les Chevaliers" (E. Mullot); fantasia and gallop, " Relief of Ekowe" (Loconte). Up to the time of our going to press the following races havo been decided : — 150 Yard;. Maiden. First Heat.—H. B. Lusk, I; J. Muir, 2;C. J. Eims.ie, 3. Other starters : H. Atkinson, A. Clark, A. G. Cooke. The Btarter got them away well together, aud Lusk showed in front ab once. Elmslie was second at the end of the hundred yards, but tripped over his tape and stopped. Recovering, however, as his men came on him, he just beat Cooke for third place, H. B. Lusk first by about five yar.-.s, Muir second. Time, 17 l-ssoc. Avery strong wind was blowing dead against the runnors. Second Heat.—J. M. Cumming3, 1; C. McManus, 2; F. Lewis, 3. Other starters, R. Hall, A, Seccombe, C. A. Ponsford. j. Dother good start and a fine race between the three placed men, not a yard covering them at th 9 finish. Time 17 2-seoc. One Milk Maiden Bicvclk. T. M. Hammond, 1 ; H. Hill, 2 ; M. M. McCallum, 3. Other starters :J. Clarke, H. A. Lewis, C. Waters, M Hickey, S. A. Gledhill. The handle of Clarke's machine snapped at the start. Lewis took the lead, and was passed in tho stiaight by McCallum and Hill. Second time round Hill took the lead and Hairmond went up second. This was the order ab the commencement of the lasb lap, Lewis being third. Ab the back of the course Hammond spurted and leaving Eill won by some forty yards, McCallum third. Timo,3min47isoc. 100 Yards Handicap. First Heat.'—S. Somerfield, BJyds, 1 ; H. B. Lusk, 4yds, 2 ; J. E. Leahy, Byds, 3. Somerfield had the best of an otherwise good start, and keeping a lead, won comfortably ; a close thing between the other two placed mon. There were 10 starters, L. H. Otway being scratched. Time, 10. sec.

Second Heat.—C. G. Elmsliß, 7yds, 1; A. J. Furquhar, 7Ayds, 2; W. E. Hackett, 10yds,3. Eight started--Moldrum, Ponsford, and George being scratched. Moat of the men got away well—Gould, 9yds, having tho worst of it. Elmslio ran home an easy winner, very little separating the second andthird. Time, 10 l-sth sees.

Third Heat.—T. M. Moresby, 4yds, 1; G Clayton, Byds, 2; W. Cruickshank, 84 yds, 3, Eight started, Pering and Gould, being scratched. Moresby bud-the wonst of the start, Lewis being away very quick, but came through his field in tine style, and raced home an easy winner by three or four yards; a yard separating the second and third. Time :10 I-sth sees.
