Colonial and European.
I?f a recent number of the iV. Z. Schoolmaster there is a paper in which the writer compares certain characteristics of Colonial and European children, The following extract Is not particularly flattering to Young New Zealand :—" As regards differences in their aptitude for 6fcudy, I should, speaking from my own experience, say that in the Eolonies children lack the stamina and the plodding by well-marked stages which, arc features of homo education. They seem Very quickly either to shov/ signs of being Jagged, or to rash off from point to point of the most captivating portions of study. Children here are, as a rnlo, quick, sharp, observant a« to anything that interests them suddenly, but like a brisk scrub fire, the . glow of interest seems to dio out nearly as Quickly ass it sprang up, and a certain duloess intervenes. In their games our young colonials quickly graduate, I have noticed ; and the good old - fashioned games are scarcely looked at, being; soon pronounced Jslow;' and games aro preferred which are in reality far beyond their years to understand thoroughly, so that they aro played in a more or less imperfect and careless tnanner, , , , Another theory of mine is thab children in the oolome3 hav«j a predilection for those studies in which 'outenesa will advance them, thia doing duty for the inestimably more valuable intelligences I opine that homo children are mow int-eIH. gent, colonial, children more Mtiuio." %«■ ***V'nSf to the last senteneo we woH*<3 cay that ife appears to us the wvita? \n eon- . fusing the meaning of words, T*|ie ftegrea f>f. a person's astuteness musii tf,=iiw4 \\pe\i the brightness of lm natnruj i'fit^Hiegiige, .ApersQn may be intelligent; ffitotTWtifif totom but he eanuofe be as^tg if' hj iafikf WWUgwee,
