ANNUAL MEETING OF THE BURNS CLUB.
There were aboufc 80 members present ad the annual meeting oi the Burns Club and' Literary Society last nighfc, which was held in the Masonic Hall, Newton,,Mr D. H* McDonald presidiug. After the usual preliminary business, the Chairman read tha annual report, which summarised the work ;, done by the Club during the past year in the furthering of its aims. A singing class had been started, but for some unaccountable reason the attendance had fa!-,, len off, and Lho class had to be discontinued The Burns Club Dramatic Club had proved a decided success — their first performance, "Hob Roy," having netted £17 clear profit. The Burns anniversary concert and ball on January 27, though a financial loss, was-' otherwise a. success, the hagcis being pronounced by, connoisseurs as (i grand." The, concert! held in connection with the Industrial Association had been very successful; acd' from their share of the proceeds the Glnb had been enabled to purchase a.piano. " ' The Highland dancing assembly , also mentioned as being in a flourishing condition, and fostering the. love of Highland dances and costumes. The membership of the Club had fallen off ■ from 300 to 170 during the year, many of the members having left the colony. Mrs; Angus, who, since the resignation of Mr Me- h Dermott, has been accompanist to the Clnb,r was tendered a hearty vote of thanks for her.; • services. The resignation of the President,'"..;' Justice Gillies, was regretted, as that gentle-;; man had ably fulfilled the duties of tha<i: position. The officers for the ensuing year were elected as follows :—President, Mr D. ; B. McDonald ; Vice-Presidents, Messrs Jas. ;; Sfcewarb, C.8., J. L. Kelly, and A. Bell; Secretary, Mr E. Peace ; Treasurer, Mr:.-: Geo. Carter. The question of registering the Club under the Friendly Societies Aeo, was brought up, and the report of a sub-;■:.-. committee was read, in which they gave ifeas ;' their opinion that the expenditure con-; neefced with the registration was so great*"' that it would be advisable for office-bearers*;; to find sureties instead. After a lengthy,,, debate on this question it was decided by alarge majority that the club should be re-; gistered. The election of a committee and; ; consideration of the treasurer's report were adjourned to a general meeting to be held on Thursday, 22nd insfcanfc.
