DARING ATTEMPT TO ROB A BANK.
ARREST OF THE ROBBER.
Sydney, October 15. A bold attempt was made to stick up the Balmain branch of theEngdisb, Scottish and Australian Chartered Bank this afternoon. At a few minutes to 3 o'clock someone closed the outer door, and the teller, Mr Caldwell' going to see who was there, was met by a man who put a revolver to his head and told him to "hold up his hands." In his surprise Caldwell did as he was told, and then the man backed into the bank, telling Caldwell, whom he kept covered with the revolver, to follow him. The man as soon as he saw the manager, Mr Druce, sitting at the desk inside, tinned his revolver on to the latter, saying he would fire if Druce stirred. Caldwell being set free, made a dash for the manager's revolver lying on the counter, but failed to secure it. The would-be robber turning his revolver to the teller again forced him and the clerk to retire into the manager's room. In the meantime a customer had come in, and tne man being put off his guar.d tho manager escaped outside, where ho gave the alarm. The would-be robber, seeing things were getting too hot for him, lied, pursued by the manager and a number of townspeople. The robber turned once or twice and flourished his revolver, and in the chase was struck heavily on the head by a sto ie thrown by Caldwell. He was dually overtaken and secured, being lodged at the local police station, where he gave the name "of "Henry Dominic Do Vere, and stated hia occupation was that of a bank, robber.
