WHANGAREI NEWS.

The effect of such quantities of.coal being shipped from this port has been decidedly p-ood. There is a demand for labour and an increased circulation of moDey. The output of the Kamo mine is about 1,000 tons weekly, and the Whauwhau mine is also sending away considerable quantities. There are a great many new people coming to the district and selecting land, chiefly Government land, and the perpetual lease system, it is said, is themcst in favour with the selectors. The object of mostly all of them is to make homes for themselves and families. They are attracted here by the climate, the suitable character of the land for fruit and other culture, its easy accessibility, md many other advantages. A few aie etjctlemen from other colonies, and also from India. To the latter the climate is a great inducement to settle. The Charitable and Hospital Board held their meeting on Friday and Saturday last In Whangarei, seven counties of the Northern district being interested. Accounts to the amount of £345 were passed for payment and numerous resolutions passed, the more important being the following :— Proposed by Mr Lane, seconded by W. P. JBeart, " That each County Chairman be requested to send in to the Board a monthly r- turn of the -haritable aid dispensed by frfoeir different committees, return to include ca_es sent for hospital treatment." ling, •• That active measures be afc once taken, to recover from those person,. who have received hospital treatment or their friends or relations who are believed to be in a position to' pay the whole or a portion of the cost of such hospital treatment." Proposed by Mr Ward, and seconded by MrSnelling, "Thatthis Board will not grant charitable aid to parties owning any property, real or personal, without a lien thereon being first given to the Board, as ib cannot recognise a pauper in anyone owning property."
