EUROPEAN FLAX,
(To the Editor.)
Sir, —There have lately been several attempts to bring the cultivation of flax, aud the profits likely to arise from it, before settlers in New Zealand, ami it is well that the factsas theyappearinthesubjoinedletter should be widely known. Mr Wilson, oi Pukekohe, last year grew about a quarter of an acre, and dressed it ready for export. He exhibited it at the Pukekohe Show," and a good deal of the flax was taken away by interested people, rather more than onehalf being disposed of in this manner. The remainder he baled and sent to Belfast, with the result as stated, which shows that from £18 to £20 is the return from one acre, even when flax is shown to be lower in price than it has been for the last 40 years. Yours, etc., G. P. Ewing. Tuakau, October 11, 1883.
