To-morrow the s.s. Arawata leaves for Fiji on her usual trip.
To-day the s.s. Arawata was taking in cargo for Fiji, whither she sails to-morrow. Last evening the s.s. Wellington sailed for Whangarei with passengers and cargo. This morning the s.s. lona arrived from the Barrier aud sailed again for Mercury Bay with passengers and cargo.
To-day the ship Wairoa is busily engaged putting out her cargo, which, it is expected, will be all out by the end of next week. ' The mail-steamer Mariposa, with English and American mails, is due.here from San Francisco to-morrow afternoon, having sailed two days late.
To-day about 11.30 a m. the brigantin Magellan Cloud jiot away for the Thames, where she is to load 100,000 feet timber for Brisbane.
Yesterday the ship Piako was entered out at the Customs for Napier, where sha is to fill up with wool for Homo, and sails in two or three days.
This morning a schooner was signalled outside Tiri, and shortly afterwards a message from the signal station stated that the schooner, a large. three-masted vessel, had sailed in the direction of the Thames. The steamer Glauous left Melbourne yesterday for Kaipara, to load timber, on account of the Kauri Timber Company. The Glaucus is a large iron steamer, of 1,363 tons gross registered 150h.p.,0r about the same capacity as the Nemesis, recently in port. She will, therefore, be able to take a cargo of fully 800,000 feet of timber to Melbourne.
The s.s. Stormbird arrived last night from Whangarei and Northern ports with the following passengers .--Misses Campbell, Smith," Oxley, Ortchinsan, Davis, Brown, Worskey, Clotworthy, Bishop; Mr and Mrs Cooke and family; Mesdamos Kelly and party (2),' Mesdames Glarkstaff and son, Laungo; Messrs Crow, Roger, Lee", Armiger, Hunter, Grant, McLean, Weston, Pilley, Ross, W. McLean, Richardson, Clements, Bradley, Bishop, Donaldson, Steadman, Withan, Drayson, and 16 steerage Her cargo consisted of 200 sacks gum, 50 sacks lime, 20 boxes-butter, 10 sacks hides, 10 boxes eggs, 1 horse and eundriej.
With reference to the refusal of the Marine Department to recognise service as third and second mate in the coasting trade fa officers in the service for the purpose of enabling persons to be examined for certificates as first mate or master ordinary, a further communication on the subject has been received by the Department from the Victorian Steam Navigation Board, in which the latter staters that its rule ia similar to that in force in this colony. It is understood the Minister of Marine intends bringing the matter under the notice of the Board of Trade, with a view of ascertaining whether it cannot be altered,' so as to allow of recognition of coasting service as third and second mate fo-'?the piirpqse of enabling persons to be examined as first mate or master ordinary.
