BOARD OF EDUCATION.
The usual meeting of the above body was held this afternoon. Present: Messrs Upton (Chairman), Carr, Goldie, Lennox, Luke, Monk, Udy, and Moab.
Balances. — The memo, from the Treasurer showed the balance to date as follows:—Education fund credit, £440 19s 8d; building fund credit, £667 lis 8d; Girls' High School credit, £84 13s 4d. Chaibman's Report.—The report of the Chairman was read and adopted. Amongso other matters it mentioned that Hotea North School had been temporarily closed on account of whooping cough. That £31 had been subscribed towards cost of school building at Korauui. Pokexo School.—Mr Goldie moved the motion of which he had given notice with regard to closing two out of three schools, and getting one central building. — Mr Goldie explained that his action was not taken because he agreed with closing the school ab Queen's Redoubt, but simply because the Board having decided to have one central school he thought it oughb to be done as quickly as possible. The Chairman read a letter received from the PokenoHill Committeestating that it was absolutely impracticable to combine thab school with the one in the Pokeno Valley. A letter was read from the Pokeno Valley School Committee, asking that their school being the most central should be allowed to remain. They had also decided that bhe Queen's Redoubt school should be re opened. .Mr Lennox thought that the two Pokeno schools should be allowed to remain. Mr Moat thought that there should be only one school in the district. Mr Udy was in favour of a central school, add he would support Mr Goldie's motion. The, Gbairman considered that one school should do for the district. He thought that the Pokeno Valley school was somewhere near the proper position. He suggested that Mr Ailright should go '4_t»;ahd report upon the question of distances between the various schools. Mr Goldie accepted Mr Upton's suggestion with regard to Mr Allrighb, and his motion was adopted as amended. —Mr Lennox said that he would like it recorded that he objected to the motion, as he thought the two local committees were best able to settle the 221 tit tor. Temperance Work.— The Rev. P. Mason wrote forwarding resolutions passed by the Temperance in Schools Committee, asking t&eir Board to reconsider their decision re refusing to allow Inspectors to examinescholars with regard to Br. Richardson's text-book on temperance, also asking the Board to pray the Governor-in-Council to make it a clas'a subject.—The Chairman explained j that the inspectors had examined whete the books,were used.—lt was resolved to answer to that effect. I Applications.—Tbefollowingapplicacions were received and dealt with: — From Alexandra School Committee applying for a grant of £2 towards repairs of° teacher's house. — Granted. Messrs Lennox and Udy thought some rent should be charge to provide for wear and tear. — From the Aratapu School Committee, asking to have building and teacher's house painted, and offering to pay half the cost. Resolved that the work be done, the Board to pay half the costs.— From the - Grafton School Committee offering to contribute £15 towards cost of repairing and painting school buildings. Resolved thab one-thud oi' the cost should be defrayed by the Committee. From Chairman of Hokianga School Committee asking for repairs to teacher's house. Resolved that the application be declined.
From Kaeo School Committee suggesting that teachers' residence might be let as the teacher did not which to occupj' it. Resolved thab consent be given to leas, ing the house. From the residents of Mafca and Mangapai asking that a schoolhouse might be erected. Deferred. — From the Puni School Committee suggesting that teachers should keep the houses they occupy in repair.--Resolved that the letter should be received.—From Rangiora Committee asking Board to supply school bell and fixings. — Declined. — From Takahue School Committee, stating that unless cattle were fenced out, the school buildings would require painting five times a year. Resolved thab the material for fencing would be supplied, provided the Committee would erect it.— From the Wairoa School Committee consenting to Ness Valley being formed into a separate district. Declined. —F/om Ellerslie School Committee asking that the teacher's house should be enlarged. Resolved that the application be declined.
