BOARD OF EDUCATION.

The ordinary meeting of this Board was held yesterday. .Present :-r-Mesßrs J. H, Upton (in the chair), J. M. Lennox, Carr Cooper, Luke, Udy and Moat..

'Chairman's Report. _—•ThQ Chairman's report stated that the East Tamaki school had been temporarily closed owing to sickness among the children. Miss A, S. Carmicbael, assistant teacher) Mercer school, had resigned and Miss X,. K^esing had been transferred from Grafton Road to Mount Eden, in the absence of assistant teacher.

Native-Scholars..—Mr W. J. Habeas, Inspector-General of- Schools, wrote: TheOhinemuri native school being closed I told the Committee that their children could attend the public school. 'In reply, they request me to speak a word on their behalf, because their -children have ■ been refused admittance to the; public schools."—-The Board decided! that. > the Maori « children, ten in number, who were those referred 'to, had,, al perfect right to attend n public, school, and resolved to inform the Botorua District .School Committee to that effect. . Queen's Redoubt.-rOn the question of closing the Queen's Redoubt school, Mr Udy stated tbiit he had fvisited ;the district and' was of opinion that one school was sufficient for the children attending the three schools at Pokeno Hill, Pokeno Valley,- and Queen's Redoubt. It was stated that Mr Goldio, who was unable to be present, was of opinion that the Pokeno Hillschool should be closed, and the Queen's Redoubt kept open. It was resojvedoh the motion of Mr Udy: "■ That the committees" of Pokeno Hill and Pokeno Valley be consulted as to amalgamation of school districts, with a view to the establishment of a; central school, and that they be asked to report, thereon as to what available site was; in their opinion obtainable'for a central school-"
