No Visible Means of Support.—Catherine Taylor was charged thns and pleaded guilty, and received a sentence of three months' imprisonment. Samuel John Wolfe wag similarly charged, but pleaded not guilty.— Mr Wickham, Relieving Officer, and Constable Ke ; lly; gave evidence proving th* bad character of the prisoner. Wolfe made a statement to -the effect that ho had tried to tret work, but failed. - Sentenced to three months' imprisonment. Negligent Cabmen.—John Keenari was charged under tho Police Offences Act with having on the 18th inst. allowed his hansom cab to remain on the Queen-street Wharf without control. — Sergeant Pratt stated that tho horise in the cab bolted on the day in question, and opposite the Thames Hotel knocked a man down" and broke his log.— The defendant pleaded guilty and was mulcted in a 10a fine, with 16s cost?. JDavid Stewart was charged with a like offence, his cab having bolted at the same time, and pleaded guilty.—-Fined 10s; and costs 16s. - < : :
Cruelty to Akimals.—A youth named John Russell was charged with having on the 16th inst. treated fowls with unnecessary cruelty. He had placed two boxes 2ft square containing 25 fowls each on the train at Helensville for conveyance to Auckland, On arriving at the Auckland station eight of the birds were found dead. —Defend&nt pleaded guilty. —-His father, who was present, expressed a hope that a light sentence would be given, as it was a first offence, and both he and his son had been out of work for six months.—Thoir Worships considered that thei'e was too much cruelty to animals nowadays, and while recognising a first .ofi'ehce they must inflict a fine sufficiently large to mark their opinion of the act. They would therefore fine defendant £2 with costs.
