DELIBERATIONS OF THE GOLD
FIELDS COMMITTEE,
Wellinoton1, this day. Several important matters affecting the mining industry vvere under consideration by the Goldfields Committee yesterday' There was a full attendance, Mr Seddon (Chairman) presiding. The French Consul (Viscount Geoffrey d'Abbans) gave evidence re sending mineral exhibits to the, Paris Exhibition next year. He pointed out bow the French people, by men and money, had aided mining industries in Canada and elsewhere, and urged the desirability of sending mineral exhibits to Paris in order to induce French capital to find its way to New Zealand, and in order to draw the attention of French metallurgists to our ores. The Chairman brought up.a draft report with regard to mineral exhibits for Melbourne, and making suggestions as to sending . Paris. but tbo fneetinfj adjourned without coming to any decision. '.; ; The Mines Department have really taken charge of the findirig and forwarding of further mineral exhibits to, Melbourne. -■,-,.,
The Committee also decided to summon Professors Cinch ahd Black to Wellington, to give evidence concerning the School of Mines. This proposal was strenuously opposed by Mr Allen, on the ground that.the expense was unnecessary, as Professor Black's evidence was already in extemo, and moreover the probabilities were that the Professors were employed lecturing and could hot get away.
