OUR GOLDFIELDS.

(BY TELEORAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.)

Thames, August 9.

Mining matters show a decided improvement, especially in the case of the Cambria and New Alburnia G.M. Companies.

New Alburnia.—The manager yesterday afternoon broke down what is known as Jbbe's leader in the eastern stopes, and obtained the very satisfactory haul of 351b picked.stone. This stone came to. hand IrOm* the leader neax* its junction with another lode which has made its appearance, and which was at first believed to be the Success reef, although there is now little doubt that it is a new body of quartz. The picked stone is of fair quality, and colours of gold were also seen freely distributed through the general dirt. The prospects of the mine have decidedly improved. Cambria.—The excellent haul of 501b picked stone was secured when breaking down the hangingwall leader in tho leading stope Over the" intermediate level yesterday afternoon. There are about three more stopes available on this leader over this level, and the quartz which shows gold freely, varies in thickness from 6 to 9 inches. The crosscut at No. 4 level is still passing through very favourable sandstone, and a couple of weeks should see No. 7 leader in hand.
