The Evening Star: WITH WHICH ARE INCORPORATED The Evening News, Morning News, and Echo.

MONDAY, JULY 30, 1881

For the causa that lacks assistance, For the wronj that needs resistance, For the future in the distance, And the gcod that wo can do.

The adjournment and conference have apparently failed in securing an

amicable settlement of the question of the Ofcago Central Railway Bill, and there is a probability of tho struggle being renewed at to-day's sitting. The Government are pledged to spend ;£60,000 on this precious railway during the present finaucial year, but this does nob satisfy Mr Pyke and the re_ cipiouts of his floral offerings. Tlie stone-wallers have an uphill fight, for by pertinacious whipping, and through the weakness of the Government in not firmly putting their foot down upon the scheme, a considerable majority of tho House ha* been pledged in favour of the Bill. However, with the facilities offered in Committee for moving endless amendments, twelve good talkers, well-genera!led, ought to' bo strong enough to prevent the measure from getting through, and we sincerely hope thoy will do it. Stonewalling tactics are only justifiable upon a very great question—one of national importance—but this is precisely ono of those questions. With all the talk about retrenchment and pursuing a solid policy of settlement and noninllation, the House has not yet been brought to its senses. Possibly, further communing with their constituents will bring about a dilFereut state of fueling among members, and the Otago Central, with its expected pickings for promoters and syndicates, may, if put oil' till next session, disappear from the parliamentary chessboard.
