MUNICIPAL ELECTION.
AUCKLAND EAST WARD.
Apparently the position of Councillor in Auckland is not at present much valued The election to-day of a gentleman to fil* the vacancy caused by the retire. menfc of Mr Alfred Kidd only resulbed in two competitors being nominated. One was Mr Henry Phillips, proprietor of a boarding house in Swanson- street, who is looked upon as the representative of the Auckland Ratepayers' Association. The other candidate is Mr John Grey, cordial manufacturer. The election was proceeding to-day, but very little interest appeared to be taken in the matter. The Lomestreet Hall was ' appointed as the polling booth. Mr Samuel Brooking officiated as returning officer and Mr VV F. Brooking as poll clerk. Only ono scrutineer was appointed, Mr J. S. Duke being present on behalf of Mr John Grey. The other candidate was on guard outside the hall looking after his own interests. There are 704 voters in bho East Ward representing 1,726 votes. The amount of interest exhibited in the result of the election may be estimated from the fact thab aboub 2 o'clock only 115 vobers had turned up and recorded 298 votes. Of course there is ample time for the others to come in before 6 o'clock.
