In the forthcoming election of a licensing committee for Devonporb akeen contest is anticipated. Informal overtures for a compromise have been made on behalf of the Takapuna Jcckey Club, but the temperance party, having nominated their candidates and appealed by circular to the public, resolved that the issue should be left to the decision of the electors. The temperance candidates have adopted the following programme :— 10 o'clock closing; strict observance of the Sunday closing clauses of the Acb ; one bar only in each house; no occasional license to be granted unless a clear majority of the Committee are favourable.
At last meeting of the Timaru Borough Council two cases of typhoid fever were reported, one of which Had proved fatal. A councillor stated that cows were depastured and their milk sold in the town, though the water they had to drink in the drain " was as full of typhoid fever as it could stick."
An infant was crying fretfully in its mother's arms in a street car the other day, when she turned to a man at her side with the request of, " Wud you plaze to look cross at him, sor ? he'll think it's his father and kape shtill."
