AUCKLAND UNIVERSITY COLLEGE COUNCIL.
The ordinary monthly meeting1 of the University College Council was hold yesterday afternoon. Present: Hon. Colonel Haultain (in the chair), the Rev. D. Bruce, Mr A. E. Devore, Rev. A. Reid, and Mr J ustjee Gillies. The minutes of the last meobing were road and confirmed.
Musro Lectures.— The reporfc of Professor Schmitt on tbo music lectures as given by him was rend. It was of a, most satisfactory nature, there being an attendance of between 3'J and 40 at the lectures. Lectures were only given twice a week now, but arrangements were in progress to have them delivered four times a week. The Committee of the Council appointed to see about the music lectures reported favourably of the work done at the lectures. Arrangements -were being made to have the lectures delivered in one of the ante-rooms of the Choral Hall, and the order for the. necessary furniture had been given. In regard to the regulations, while recommending the adoption of Borne similar to those in use in the Adelaide University, they were of opinion that the matter had better be deferred for the time being. The Professorial Board sent a report recommending tho insertion of music in the list of subjects to be taught as recorded in tho calendar, and that Italian bo cut out as no longer necessary.—The reports were received, and tho rerjommendution adopted. Drawing Master.-r^Mr Trevithick, instructor in drawing, sent his report, which was very satisfactory, as the attendance at the classes had risen to 122, including one ladjv He drew attention to the fact that the class now wanted increased accommodation.—The Chairman said that arrangements had been made with tho Grammar School Governors to allow the drawing master the use of their large hall with furniture. Mr Trevithick asked in his report for the use of a model 6team-6iigine now in I'rof. Brown's possefcsion, being under •the impression that it belonged to the University, The report was received, and, in regard to tho steam ongino model, the Registrar was instructed to inform Mr Trevithick that it was Professor Brown's private property. Provision was made for the payment of the janitor of the Grammar School for his attendance at the drawing classes at the rato of 2s 6d a night.
Attendant Music Lecturer.—Payment of the natural science assistant, who assisted at tho music lecturos, was authorised. . . .
Royalty.—The Chairman said no stops had been taken to collect the royalty of od a, ton on the Taupiri coal mine. The Registrar said that the first payment would be made with the rent, which was not due just yet. After some discussion the Registrar was directed to inspect the output and receipt books of the Taupiri Coal Company so ats to ascertain what the royalty amounted to.
New Lectwees, —The Registrar of the New Zealand University wrote enclosing the following resolutions as passed by the Senate of tho University : —" (1) That the affiliated institutions Bhould be urged to provide for teaching logic and psychology in their bearing on education, and also the history of philosophy, of education, and of educational method. (2) That, on such arrangements being made, tho University provide for granting certificates in such subjects, and that the Education Department be asked to give credit for such certificates:" —After some- considerable discussion, in which the fact was plainly brought forward that the College had not sufficient funds to establish- another lectureship or professorial chair, the consideration of tho resolutions was. deferred until the next meeting. . College Skai.—A communication was read from the Agent-General (Sir F. D. Bell) in regard to the College seal. He reported that the engraver now bad the work in hand, and it was progressing fairly well. —The letter was received.
The Pastokal Associatton Lands.— Messrs Devore and Cooper wrote enclosing an ofl'er from Mr Guy,' of Ellerslifi, to lease for twelve months the land, stables, cottage and yards belonging to the Pastoral Asso-, ciation at Greenlano for £100 a-year, or £75 without the house.—The property was mortgaged to the Council, but it was the opinion: of all present that it was not advisable, in the present state of the property market, to sell the land.—lt was agreed to leave the matter in the hands of the College lawyers to arrange about the lease."
Collkge Library.—The Library Committee recommended that, as it was impossible at* present to make a satisfactory classification of the books belonging to the library and to supervise them, the present system of leaving them in charge of the various professors, and the Registrar, until the present Lands Office was available for the University, be adhered to.
Accoukts. — Current accounts to the amount of £343 12s 8d were passed for payment. ■ .
