IMPOSING ON PUBLIC CHARITY
m TRENCHANT REMARKS BY THE CHRISTCHURCH R.M. (P.V TELEGRAPH— OWN CORRESPONDENT.) Christchurcu, this day. Ix a case at Rangiora.Mr Whibeford, R.M., made some very trenchant remarks concerning the disposition on the part of people to fly to the Government for charitable assistance. He said it was simply becoming intolerable that persons alleged they could not control their children, and men in prosperous conditions of life also alleged they could not support their aged parents. Nearly everyone who had a burden of this kind appeared to try and cast it on the State. Referring to the parties who were then before the Court stating they could not support a relative, he pointed out that they were attempting to cast the care and cost of maintenance on every one of those present, and on every industrious colonist. Some very decided steps must be, however, taken to check such a feeling and curb an enormous expenditure by the Government on cases where persons were in a position to restrain their children and were able to maintain their aged parents. This was all the more to be desired in view of the fast - increasing taxation, which was in a measure being brought about by the large expenditure for aid and charitable institution.'!. As one of the public'" he" objected to have such cases foisted upon the country, and as a servant of the Government he should consider it as part of his duty to discontinuance in every way the country being put to expense simply to save the outlay which families might reasonably be expected to incur in the maintenance of the children of their relatives, or their old parent*.
