A FIRE CHECKED.
EXEMPLARY PRESENCE OF MIND
(BY TELEGRAPH.—PRESS ASSOCIATION.)
Gkeymouth, Sunday.
The town had a narrow escape from a destructive 6re this morning. About seven o'clock Robert Kettle, grocor, next the Melbourne Hotel, was awakened by a choking sensation from smoke. He rushed out, and found a small office beneath the staircase in flames, and smoke and flame ascending the stairs to where the family resides. Fortunately a bath tub of water was handy, and without stopping to give the alarm he fought the fire for a quarter of an hour until he got it under^ By this time a passing milkboy had raised the alarm, and the brigade were soon on the spot. When the charred timber waa torn down they found that the piles under the chimney were also on fire. Nothing but Kettle's exertions and presence of mind prevented a serious fire. The damage is comparatively slight. The building is insured for £450 in the New Zealand office. The fire must have been smouldering all night.
