A COOL ROBBERY.
Mr Patrick Brodie, licensee of the Naval and Family Hotel, at the corner of Pittstreet and Karangahape Road, has been robbed in a most impudent manner. Ib appears that Mr Brodie was in the habit of kesping the cash taken in the hotel locked up in a chest of drawers in his bedroom for safety. The special drawer in which the money was placed was invariably kept locked. About half - past seven o'clock on Saturday night Mr Brodio was in his bedroom and saw that his money was all right. About 10 o'clock he went up to add his night's takings to the amount already in hand, when he discovered that his private bank was broken ; in fact, the money had disappeared. The robbery was at once reported to Detective McGrath, who, in conjunction with Chief Detective Tuohy, made inquiries into the matter. The result of the information which they received was that two men named William Noble and James Stewart, alias Stoddarb, were arrested. The prisoners however denied any knowledge of bhe affair. The detective succeeded in recovering the greater part of the money taken, only the cheques being lost. This is a good thing, otherwise Mrßrodie must have lost heavily, as the totalamounb was £102 12s 9d. The prisoners appeared before the Court this morning, when Messrs C, D. Whitcombe and S. Y.Collins were on the bench. On the application of Inspector Broham, the men were remanded for a week.
