Twenty-seven Christchurch lawyers have met and declared that they would like to see Mr Justice Ward raised to the Supreme Court bench.
Auckland is a fruitful vine. Last month there were 108 births and only 30 deaths in the city. Wellington had 78 births during the same period and 34 deaths. W. Thomson, a Dunedin publican, has been badly hurt by falling over a bank 30 feet high, but hopes are entertained of his recovery. Ghastly find ! A human leg, with a boot on, was found on the beach three miles north of New Brighton, Canterbury, on Sunday afternoon. Several inhabitants of Cambridge have been losing cattle lately, all of which are young stock, and have disappeared in a most unaccountable manner. Some of the owners think they have been slaughtered.
A fight to a finish has takenjplace between Murphy of Auckland, and Molloy of Dunedin, for £25 a-side and the light weight championship. Murphy was victorious.
J. Campbell's house, near Wanganui, was burned down on Saturday night. Insurances :- Colonial,- £150'; Norwich Union, £150; and Liverpool London and Globe, £150.
The Wellington detectives say that they are aware of the party which committed the burglary at Petone railway station last Sunday morning, but owing to the difficulty of identifying the money which composed the stolen property, they lack evidence to sheet the crime home.
The barquentine Annie Bow, from the Bluff to Adelaide, with timber, put back on Saturday, owing to her having lost her deck cargo, and the refusal of the men to do duty. The vessel is not damaged, bub the men got scared, and compelled the captain to return to the Bluff.
The cable-repairing steamer Sherard Osborne is still grappling for a portion of the broken cable. By some means they secured the single wire cable from Wellington across Cook Strait, and broke it. The whole of the work from the South is therefore thrown on the cable from Wanganui, and there necessarily must be considerable delay in the work.
