PROTECTION IN CANADA.

(To the Editor.)

Dear Sir,—At the request of the Industrial Association I beg to hand you the extract of a letter from a kinsman in Canada which I read ab the meeting hold ab bheir rooms on Monday lasb. With this you will also find a printed report of the industries of Gananoque, compiled for the '' Montreal Witness. ''

This lovely little town is situated on a river of the same name at its junction with the mighty St. Lawrence, which is here called theLakeofbhel, ooolslands—there are actually 1,800 islands of allsizes and shapes, from a mere rock to many acres in extent. At the time of my visit summer was fading into autumn, and the badge of Canada (the beautiful maple) was changing from_ a lovely green to burnished gold, which reflecting the rays of the setting sun, and reproducing itself on the waters of the rivers, here several miles wide, went to make up a scene which'no New Zcalandcr has any conception of. Add to this the numerous pleasure boats, of which almost every man and boy has one, and the excursion steamers filled with pleasure - seekers visiting their friends— locally termed campers—who locate themselves on these islands; the handsome residences of the manufacturers, the buildings of the various denominations for holiday purposes on the islands, ef.c., etc., and you get an idea of the prosperity of the place and the advantages of protection, which will go far to seriously shake the faith of free traders—ab least bhis was its effect upon me.—l am, etc., J. M. McLachlan.
