The wreck of the ill-fated Hawea, forms i tlie subject of a spirited and comprehensive sketch in the current issue of the " Family Friend ' now published, showing the well-known coast lino and breakwater with the submerged vessel jusb after she had struck, and the passengers leaving in boats. Accompanying the sketch is a I graphic letterpress description of the catastrophe, giving in concise form interesting and full particulars concerning the peculiar circumstances surrounding the loss of a first-class and popular boat. Amongst obher novelties in tlifj issue, is noticeable a full page engraving of the winter fashions, some first-class items of ladies' gossip, the continuation of Mr Seff'ern's entertaining history of the "Early Settlement of New Zealand," and also of that sensational serial story " Miriam Grey." There are likewise in the "Family Friend " several complete novelettes, humorous sketches, and a firstclass budget of news and popular reading for all, the whole combining amusement with instruction for the home circle, at a nominal price. ' His Lordship Bishop Luck, speaking oi {she publication of the " Early History of <jhe Catholic Church *n New Zealand," says :— '* We are now celebrating the first jubilee period of the Catholic Cnurch in New Zealand ; the publication, therefore, of this ' Early History' is exceedingly appropriate, and will form an acceptable souvenir to eclebtate the first planting of the faith in this colony. The history is written by the Apostolic Bishop Pompallier himself, of which he is the author and hero."' In accepting a complimentary copy, the Bishop says : " I thank you very sincerely for the beautifully-bound copy of your edition of the 'Early History of the Catholic Church in Oceania.' I was not aware that such high-class binding could be doiie in Auckland." A copy of the history should be found in every Roman Catholic home. It is now published, and may be had from the canvassers or at the Star Office. •si -qoijj -J9iios_iooq jCu-e uioij .to 'pußpfonv '30JHO u^S OCW _B UB .eg Xbui puu -uutoj Hcoq vi poqsjiqnd ._ou s.i ,/_}iopu9_\ imoisjoo V.. ~ ,'s.toj oAtjq oi -suras. _\\,} ov_% aox ■j.io.mj joajjod v . *X_pj9:)S9_ out o. pins a-flas -_[ooq pinuij,' _ ,*9S[3 Sutqjoa-Vajnos ni j OAOnaq I *pao.„ j£ui uodQ ." __b}_ oqi *jo suorjipo iuo -jojjip q.!A. p9itd _n_ia;n aa*e m_hs aqi, " ,-^ovu pail-O , uviu op.B aaSStq ra uoao Sat.v_q si j(ooq Oq.
