R.M. COURT, TE AWAMUTU.
On Friday last, before Captain Jackson, KM., the case of the Rabbit Inspector v. Grant, Scott, Grierson, and Scott was heard, Mr Hay appearing for defendant in each case. The defendants were all convicted, and fined £1 9s.—J. C. Grierson v. W. Howell: Mr Gresham for plaintiff. Judgment for plaintiff, £11 14s ;■ costs, £2 12s. (Before the R.M. and two Native Assessors.)
Rangimorakau v. Hemi Kokako, Te Puke and others. Ngarama v. same.—Mr Gresham for plaintiffs, Mr Hay for defendants. —After four days' hearing judgment was given for both plaintiffs for £5 15s and costs, £4 14s, and for £6 and costs, £5 7s, If all cattle claimed by plaintiffs be returned to them, the costs only to be paid. These cases are of special interest, as they arise in consequence of the Maoris having attempted to set up an amateur R.M. Court amongst themselves, one defendant posing as magistrate, another as sergeant of police, and so on. These judgments will possibly assure our native brethren that Queen "Victoria's courts are of more importance than King Tavvhiao'e.
