PIAKO COUNTY COUNCIL

The usual monthly meeting of the Piako County Council was held on Friday. Present : Crs. Chepmell (Chairman), Dibble, Gould, Browning, Hcaney, Mills, Murphy j Brunskill and Williams. Be road through Matamata riding, forming part of the proposed new road fiom Tapapa to Wairere, C:1. Dibble stated that the proprietors of the Matamata estate were not agreeable to do any work on the road through their property" Mr F. D. Rich, on belialf of the T.V.L. Co., wrote asking that work on this road be started at once at the southern end, as he was about to spend a large sum of money in bush clearing, etc., and this work would give a direct line of road from LichfielU to the scene of the work. It was resolved that the County Engineer prepare plans and specifications for the work from the Cambridge-Taurangaroad to the Oraka stream, and that tenders be called for the work. The Taotaarba Road Board asked the Council to delegate to them the necessary powers to keep the main county road in repair, i.e. to declare the county road to be a district road under Section 81 of the P. W. Act, 1882. The Council resolved to accede to the request. Mr liich asked for the expenditure of a few pounds on the Patetero-Taunuiga road, as it would be asked to carry a lot of traffic this winter. It was agreed to spend the sum of £20 on the road at once. Mr Rich offered to form some eigh tmiles of road, ploug and sow the same down in grass and clover, roll it, and make up embankments, for the sum of 3s per chain, i.e., £12 per mile. The offer was accepted, and was considered a remarkably good one for the Council. Mr Thompson wrote asking that the approaches to the Wairakau bridge be made. Ie was resolved to make them. Mr Bailey wrote on behalf of the Auckland Agricultural Company, asking that the road from Oxford to Waitoa be cleared and put in good order, and that gates on the road be removed, as cattle traffic was increasing on this line, and these gates were a great inconvenience. It was resolved that no action bo taken re the removal of the gates or the making of the road. Mr Hawkins wrote re the punt at Murphy's, hoping that the bridge would be built, or, at any rate, that the punt would not be stopped. Mr C. Murphy gave notice that he would cease runiang tLe punt after the 31st of July next. A petition was presented and signed by 113 persons praying for the erection of a bridge over the Waiboii Riveratthepresentpuntsite It was resolved to call for tenders to take over the punt and work it on tho same terms as those now in existence. No action was taken regarding the bridge petition, as the Council could not sec where the money was to come from at present. It was resolved- to vote £20 to make an approach from the Waiorongomai township* to the hill track, the road now being impracticable. Re the Thames Harbour Beard District, information was received from the Minister of Marine to the effect that the boundaries of the district had been curtailed, leaving out the Ohinemuri and Piako districts. It was resolved to repair a bad spot on tho ' road between Waotu and the 14 mile finger post. Mr A. Isaacs wroto asking \? a road to be laid out from the Okoroiro railway station to the Hot Springs, "where he was about to erect a sanatorium. There was at present no roa.d. a.t all to his block. The manager of \\\s Ok oroire Estate refused to allow timber to be carted through that property, as there was no road in existence, It was agreed that if Mr Isaacs would pay expenses the Couucil would assist him in the matter as fay 88 possible, and would take the road under the Public Works Act.
