PARNELL BOROUGH COUNCIL.
The ordinary meeting was held lastevening* Present: The Mayor (Mr S. T. George), in the chair, and Crs. McConnell.McLachlan, Lyell, Gilmore, McKenzie, McCabe, Gay> and Dewes.
Burgess Row..—Some twenty names were struck off and the roll was passed. Complaint. — J. Saithernwood complained of "extra water ra^e " of 5s for a horse, and that ho was prevented from exposing goods on the footpath while others were allowed to do so : Reeolved that the rate and by-law be enforced. Works.—The Overseer of Works made various recommendations, and it was resolved that ho should clear the channel across footpath in Manukau Road. Questions re overcharge on rubble and repairs to main sewer and wall in St. George's Bay Road were referred to the Streets Committee. Nuisances. —The Inspector reported that the slaughter-houses gave no cause for complaint; that he found a difficulty in persuading people to use earth, etc., for deodorising purposes ; that the dust contract was not carrk 3 out satisfactorily as yet, and that a hole dug to the main sewer in Mr Burns's property, Falcon-street, was injurious to the drain and to health. Notice to drain had been served: The report was received. Parnell School. —A deputation from the Parnell School Committee waited on the Council re water rates, and Mr Dewes gave notice to move, "That the School Committee be only charged for what water they use, that it be measured by metor, and that they be allowed to purchase their own meter."
Finance.—The Mayor stated that the Council had a debit balance on general account, £1,133 ; drainage loan account, a credit balance of £144 14s 5d ; waterworks account, credit balance, £44 Is 4d; water supply account, credit balance, £4110s lOd. Road Metal.—McSheti'ery's tender was accepted : Hand broken, 4s 4d ; machine broken, 4s 4d ; rough scoria, Is lid ; fine scoria, 2s 2d. St. Stephen's Cemetery.— A petition, praying that this cemetery be consecrated and thrown open for public burials, was referred to the Finance and Legal Committee. Claim.—Further discussion took place on McGuire's claim of £29, for extra work, and it was resolved that £4 19s be paid to Mr McGuire in discharge of Council's liability. Complaint.—Mrs Matherson complained that she had been unfairly dealt with by the Council in the matter of rates, as she was the only defaulter proceeded against. She made other complaints re difficulties thrown in her way when moving her house. The Mayor promised to make the necessary inquiries. Parnell Rise.—Mr Hamilton wrote that the footpath wa3 unsafe, and it was resolved to have it tarred.
Fire Brigade.—F. Judge, foreman of the Brigade, wrote that £12 was due for boots, and it was reaolved_ to pay that amount when funds were available.
