WAIKATO NOTES.
(from our own correspondent.)
Hamilton, Friday. CATTLE SALES.
Our opening cattle sale was a great success and was attended by farmers from all parts of the district. The prices realised were low—extremely low—but they are the same everywhere else. Although numbers of cattle and sheep were passed in, there must have been some £700 worth sold under the hammer, and more changed hands after the sale.
The horso salo would havo been a great success but for darkness coming on and preventing large numbers from being offered, and numerous buyers present wero much disappointed, as there were many good animals on hand Several wore sold at prices for hacks from .18 to £14 at which latter price several changed hands. None of the heavy horses were offered owing to the lateness ot the hour It seems to me that the horse sale should not be held on the same day as the cattle and sheep are offered, and no doubt in future the auctioneers will see the advantage of this. Mr McNiccol has applied for the yards for a second sale, and Mr J. S. Buckland wil hold one on Thursday, March 3.lst, which date will enable some persons on the le Awamucu line to come and return by tram. That Hamilton will in the future prove tho placo for sales, I feel pretty sure, and it would be a blessing for the whole community if they could be induced to hold largo central sales, and less frequently than is now done. At present pottering little sales aro held all over the place, wliich cannot possibly pay either the auctioneers or the dealers, and the amount of time wasted is something enormous. Local jealousies, however, rule the roost, and time, the great curor of all diseases, will alone settle tho matter.
