The" Evening' Bell "ceased publication on Saturday. In a valedictory article, the proprietors state tho reasons for discontinuance as follows :—" The times have been inauspicious, and wo yield to circumstances over which wo have no control. Tho people of Auckland have been educated to expect in their newspaper a larger and more costly literary production than is given in any other part of Nsw Zealand. And it is a matter of constant remark among visitors from Australia that in the abundance, the variety, the freshness and general excellence of their news columns, tho vigour and ability with which they are conducted, the daily journals of Auckland set an example to Australasia." At the time and place appointed for receiving nominations on Saturday last to fill the seven extraordinary vacancies in the Birkenhead Road Board none were forthcoming, and as that portion of the district not included in the new borough is about to be merged into the Waitemata County, no further action will bo taken to secure the election of a Board. The meeting to be held to-morrow evening in the City Hall, for Christian workers, may be expected to be one of the most instructive yet held in connection 'with the visit of Pastor George Mfiller. His address will be for encouraging and comforting all engaged in Christian work. The doors will be open at 7 o'clock, and the service will commence at 7,30. A collection will be made to defray expenses. Messrs Cochrane and Son sold by auction to-day a property in Hadyn-street, late William-street, with 33 feet frontage x 110 feet, and two cottages thereon, for £140. Two houses in Church-street, Ponsonby, were also offered for sale, but did not find a purchaser,
