STATEMENT IN THE HOUSE OF LORDS.

London, May 12,

In the House of Lords, Viscount Hardinge questioned the Duke of Cambridge as to the authorship of statements made by the " Daily Telegraph," on the defectiveness of the defences of Great Britain.

The Duke, in reply, discredited the statement made by the " Telegraph " and said he believed that the Government fully recognised the importance of the matter.

Lord Salisbury assured the Lords that the Government were exercising the utmost vigilance in the defence of the country in the present state of affairs in Europe. Negligence by the Government in such a matter would be a grave dereliction of duty. At the same time, it would not be politic to disclose the nature of the precautions being taken. The Premier further, in his remarks, deprecated any panic, and protested that the statements made by Lord Wolseley at a dinner speech, in which he charged the Government with neglecting the defences of Great Britain, should have been ventilated in Parliament.
