THE HEATHEN CHINEE.
I think 'tis Scott, in " Lady of the Lake," Who tells how Roderick Dim, for life's dear sake,
His back against a huge rock placed, and so He stood prepared to meet his wily foe. And thus he spake—" This rock shall fly From its firm base as soon as I."
So I must stand, historic truth's my rock, I'm mail'd and arm'd to meet my foeman's shock. Come on, Macbeth, I'm truer than Macduff, And will not yield till Brett cries, "Hold ! enough !"
The poor Chinee is friendless, helpless, lone, And wo must treat him with respect; I own He's been ill-used, and " Shame ! " I cry ; For those Who injure him are cowards, and my foes ! Therefore, I'm merciful. Protect, defend. The helpless Chinee .as a foreign friend, And send him home. Wo all resuect him
there; But Good Lord keep him from us, is our prayer.
Now then for facts. A gardener has men \ Working for him—for argument say ten ; Each man lives in his house, pays tax and
rent, Marries and works, owes not a man a cent. Twenty Chinese come near, and in one hub Huddle, and muddle in manure and smub. They live bub on the scantiest fare; no
wives Have they to cheer—or aggravate—their lives ! No children to feed and clothe ; no collec-
tion plate To fill on Sundays ! So with joy elate They toil, eat, drink, and sleep; and
hoenty pay No more to revenue than one of ours may. Now, I can prove the ten men named above Are worthless, nearly homeless, only love Of willing neighbours, aid and charity Keep them just alive— The came is the
Chinee. Oh, shame shall come ; our land be over
thrown When thus our aims aro lowered to their
own ! Raise the poor Chinee, cultivato and save, But curse the men who bring him here a slave ; For he's a traitor and a human " cuss "
Who keeps the Chinee hero to injure us ! XV. R. Wills.
