THE St. LOUIS MURDER.

MAXWELL'S LAST HOPK GONE.

St. Louis, April 3.—Maxwell's attorney received a despatch yesterday announcingl that theUnitedStntes Supreme. Court had refused the petition for a rehearing of the murder case. Ho will be sentenced at once by the Statp Supreme Court. Maxwell hua not yet learned of this latest step. It is understood that his lawyers will bring all possible influence to bear upon the Governor to induce him to commute the sentence. The impression seems to be, however, that executive clemency is out of the question.

Samuel W. Brooks, father of Hugh M. Brooks, alias W. H. Maxwell, under sentence of death for tho murder of Preller, has written a long and touching appeal to the American people to help him and save his son from the gallows.
